Sodium chlorite recipe?

I bought some 80% sodium chlorite powder. Unfortunately I don't know how to make the mms sodium chlorite solution. I want to make a small amount of the solution since I only have 2 small dark bottles (I'm re-using the 2 dark bottles that I bought some solution in online previously). I want to make 2 or 3 ounces (enough for the 2 dark bottles that you would typically buy online).

Can some one please tell me the ratio of sodium chlorite to water that I would need to make the solution properly?

You want to make it a 28% solution, so the best thing to do is measure/weigh it. Are your bottles 2 oz or 4 oz? I don't think there is a standard/typical size. I think they are sold in those 2 sizes normally.
You can use an online calculator to figure out how much to use for one cup, but definitely use a measuring cup. If you have 2 oz bottles, you only want to make a half cup of the solution. so 28% of half a cup.

I made 1 cup of the solution at 28%. This made two 4 oz bottles.

I'll throw my way in, because you might as well have some options .

It takes a scale that weighs in .1 gram weights. (I have found that it is helpful to have the ability to tare and to turn off the auto-off feature).

It takes glass or pyrex to make it in. It is wise to have a dedicated plastic or wooden spoon.

After doing it several times this is what works for me.

Put my glass pot on the scale. Tare it out.
Add the amount of water I want. Get the weight of that water in grams..
Go to the calculator and figure out what 28% of that water weight is. (here's where the .1gram comes into play)
Subtract the 28%t from the total amount of water weight. write down that figure.
Once you have that figure, start removing water until you equal the original water weight less the 28% figure.
Then you can add back in the CS until it weighs the original water weight.


An example, to make it easy, would be to put in 100 grams of water (by weight) into the pot.
28% of that would be 28 grams. and 100 minus 28 would be 72 grams
dip out water until the weight is 72 grams.
Then add the sodium chlorite back in until you equal 100 grams again.

You then may want to put the pot or dish on the stove and apply a little heat to get the flakes to melt. Not much. Stir with your dedicated spoon. (I actually use plastic picnic spoons)

Someone else may have an easier way of doing it, but using these directions I can make 4 oz or 6 cups.

You do not need to heat it.
You could heat it. That is no problem.
It was just easier for me to skip that step.
I did it at room temperature.
It just takes a little more time. I do not remember how much time.
Maybe overnight or after a day or so.

Absolutely, Jemco - in fact, one of the "directions" I've seen says to make both the MMS and the CA without heating, just mix, bottle and put in a dark place overnight. The next day you can strain them (separately), if there are any impurities.

1) says to mix 40 ounces of distilled water to 1 pound of sodium chlorite powder to make 57 onces of mms

the second recipe that came with the powder from sodiumchloritepowder.com says to

2) mix 32 ounces of warm water to 1 pound of sodium chlorite powder

That guy at the mmsstore site is wrong and gives out bad instructions. 40 ounces is nearly 1167 ml and that is the exactly correct amount for 454 grams (1 lb) of sodium chlorite.

This is the formula Steve gave and it is correct:
Just use the number 2.57. Multiply the amount of Sodium Chlorite by 2.57 and the answer will be how much water in ml you need. Divide the amount of water you want to use by 2.57, and this is how much Sodium Chlorite you use. For example 454 grams Sodium Chlorite times 2.57 equals 1166.78 ml.
454 x 2.57= 1166.78 (1167)
Or, 1167 ml of water divided by 2.57 equals 454 grams of Sodium Chlorite.
