hello all my friends, hope you are all well... i need a little more advice please... Duke has been doing marvelously he was a little runny a few days ago, so went back to 1/4 doses and it stopped, and have been working up to 1/2 doses again, with Duke responding in an unbelievable way... it seems that even his eyes are clearer (he was getting cataracts due to his age) and he has been behaving like a younger dog! Just that i was hearing movement in his tummy... But now this morning he has had the runs quite badly again, suddenly and there was bright red blood present!!!! He did quite a lot of straining, and my vet said that the blood was probably due to that, but still I am worried... i have been advised to give him something to stop the runny stools, but am a little concerned about stopping it due to the fact that i feel that he is detoxing and don't wish to stop that... he has only had this one episode so far, otherwise I might feel differently...

re the mms, do you think i should give it a complete rest for the day and then perhaps if all goes well start slowly again?

thanking you in advance...

Hi!
Yes, it would probably be best to let him rest. Start again tomorrow if his stool has firmed up. I did give my dog a little pepto during her sick days when I was giving her to much. Helped her feel better quicker but still gave her the whole day off. Yes, I noticed my girl too was energetic like a pup almost! It is so neat to see!

The blood does worry me though. If he has runs why was he straining? Wish I could give some good advice but that has me bam boozled! Hopefully someone else will have a good suggestion!
Hope you all have a good day!
Denise

thank you Denise... yes the blood is worrying me too... but sometimes the straining does come with the runs, due i suppose to the intestines going into spasm and causing an automatic urge to push, even though the stools are liquidy....so really really hoping that is what caused it...

What is pepto?
Thanks so much Denise :)

Sorry.... Pepto is my short cut for Pepto Bismal. That yucky pink stuff for vomiting and diarrhea. It can be given in liquid form but the tablet is a lot easier. All my animals through the years have fought the liquid and a lot of it gets all over the place! :) The tablet is working good and works in the animal just as well. I hide mine in a piece of squished up cheese and my new used dog will gobble it right down. It comes in different brands. If you have a Dollar General or some sort of Dollar Store near you it will be a lot cheaper than a pharmacy store. My new used dog, Biscuit, tends to have stomach upset very easily and this has worked real well. She is about 30 to 35 lbs and I give her 1/4 tablet as needed. I rarely have had to give 4 doses, but if you do follow directions on the box as for how often it can be given.
Sincerely,
Denise

Yes, Lady. She got to live comfortably till this last fall when something happened in her brain and she would flip in and out of nice dog to growly dog in just seconds. Till then she was happy and comfy.
Now we have Biscuit. Wouldn't you know, she now also has a lump on her belly, but right now I have to much going on and she also has crystals in her urine that I am trying to rid her of. Can't do both at the same time as I am using herbs on the bladder problem.

When I start on her lump I will be keeping track of things and letting the forum know.

Yes, please do keep in touch with us and let us know the good, the bad and the ugly. We learn from it all.

All the best to you and your friend!!

Health to all

Hi, hope your BFF is doing better. I also gave my dogs Pepto Bismal, in the liquid, just used a syringe. But I found that Kaopectate works better to firm them up ( I gave mine 5 cc's every 2 hrs. they are 25 lbs and under.

Another thing that I have given them to help with the diarrhea is dry white rice (cooked of course), it helps absorb liquid in the stool and also 1 dollop (Tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree.- be sure just plain pumpkin - no spices. You can also give Metamucil (1 tsp per meal till stool firms).

I wouldn't give everything all at the same time. Just several things that work. I did give mine the rice and pumpkin mixed together, with the metamucil. Another good thing that helps with diarrhea is just plain old DRY white mashed potatoes. I use that myself, works wonders - be sure no spices, butter or anything.
As Horsefeathers said, please keep us informed.

Thank you Glenda :))

Update this morning... stools are firm and no sign of blood at all!!!! Soooooo happy! Now I'm sure that it was the mms doing its thing, so did as you all suggested and gave him a one day break yday... and kept his diet light with a little chicken and rice... there's obviously lots of work for the mms to do, so shall start really slow again today, I think I'll give him 4 quarter drops i.e that will mean he'll have 1 drop all day and see how he takes that... he is rather tired but happy... ALL the family agree that his eyes are really clearing up (from the cataracts that were forming) so that is a real bonus, totally unexpected and well, quite miraculous!!!!

Feeling encouraged thank you so much for your support my friends and I'll be ion touch XXX

Ahh, yes! I forgot about the pumpkin. When we first got Biscuit she had chronic diarrhea and plain canned pumpkin was suggested to me by a friend. Worked better than pepto and she like it! I just put a dollop in her food and waa laa! No more diarrhea. I now always keep a can available.
